Implementation period: 2024-06-01 - 2025-06-01
Type: National
Division: The Division of Applied Geochemistry and Environmental Engineering
As part of the project, the primary focus will be conducting preliminary research on solid electrolytes for next-generation batteries, which will allow for the identification of optimal thematic paths and, consequently, the submission of grant applications to fund further research. Studies will be carried out in several directions, including polymer electrolytes for hybrid cells and innovative potassium-based solid electrolytes. A comprehensive characterization of transport properties will be performed, particularly ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. These materials will then be tested in Li-ion and K-ion batteries using innovative cell architectures. The research will employ various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, impedance spectroscopy, and others. Research on hybrid electrolytes will focus on mixed sodium and lithium-ion conductors.
The proposed project will make a significant contribution to the understanding of all-solid-state cells and ionic conductivity in solids, describing the conduction mechanisms of sodium and potassium ions and the relationships between various physicochemical parameters, which are of great interest to researchers in this field. Considering that both sodium and potassium cells are relatively immature technologies, especially with the use of solid electrolytes, it is essential to conduct extensive fundamental research to describe the reactions occurring in these cells to enable their future implementation. Overcoming the identified issues in the studied materials will lead to the development of new materials with improved transport properties, which will be crucial for the further development of cost-effective and safe high-efficiency energy storage technologies.
