Project title: IT tool supporting the decision making process of the RES integration project with underground gas storage in salt caverns

The project aims to develop an IT tool supporting the decision-making process of the RES integration project with underground gas storage in salt caverns. In order to achieve the objective of the project, the following tasks will be conducted:

• Development of the concept and structure of the model for estimating investments in storage and infrastructure as well as recommendations for decisions on the energy market.
• Development of a mathematical model of an integrated system based on a natural gas network and an electricity network, considering bidirectional energy conversion.
• Development of a module for the selection of devices and assessment of their impact on the operation of the integrated natural gas and electricity networks.
• Validation of the mathematical models implemented in the IT tool supporting the decision-making process of the implementation of the RES integration project with the underground gas storage in salt caverns.

The result of the project will be an IT application enabling the simulation of many scenarios of RES integration with underground gas storage in caverns.

The project is funded by The National Centre for Research and Development and Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG S.A) (Application competition number: 4/4.1.1/2019, project no. POIR.04.01.01-00-0041/19 ).

The project is carried out in a scientific and research partnership. The project leader is the Cracow University of Technology, and the research partner is the Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The industrial partner is PGNiG and TwinIO Energy.

The project started in mid-2021 and will be carried out until May 2023.
