Project type: International

Division: Division of Renewable Energy Sources

In October 2020, the implementation of the pre-defined Project “Capacity building of key stakeholders in the area of geothermal energy” (KeyGeothermal) began. It is funded by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (EEA FM) 2014-2021. It belongs to the “Environment, Energy and Climate Change” Program, the Area of ”Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Energy Security”, bilateral cooperation

Consortium implementing the Project:

  •  Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków (Poland) – Project promoter
  • National Energy Authority (Iceland) – Project donor partner

The aim of the Project: to build the capacity of key stakeholders in Poland in the area of geothermal energy by increasing their knowledge and skills in using and managing its resources, specially for the needs of low-emission heating. The Project will also contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the EEA Program “Environment, Energy and Climate Change”.

A systemic approach to the Energy transformation in Europe SAPEA

On June 29, 2021, the SAPEA Working Group, established to develop an issue concerning the systemic approach to the Energy transformation in Europe, completed its work. SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) is a part of the European Mechanism for Science Advice. Together with the Group of Principal Scientific Advisors, SAPEA provides independent scientific advice to the European Commission to support its decision-making process. The result of the work of a 20-person team of experts, in which D. Sc. Lidia Gawlik – professor of our Institute, a study “A systemic approach to the energy transition in Europe” has been published:  http://www.sapea.info/energy

The study was submitted to the European Commission.

There are many possible pathways towards a carbon-neutral future. Achieving it by 2050 is possible, but this requires urgent action.

This is the central conclusion of SAPEA’s evidence review report on the energy transition, and the corresponding Scientific Opinion of the European Commission’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisors.

But this is not just a technical challenge. To make the energy transition a reality, we need to solve a huge systemic problem, coordinating countless individual voluntary decisions on investment, consumption and behaviour across Europe.

This means transforming the entire European energy system — a change which will affect every part of our society and require huge investment during the transition. It must be done in a socially equitable way. And we already need to accelerate progress if we want to achieve the EU’s target of net zero emissions by 2050.
