Who we are

The Division of Environmental Studies and Waste Management conducts research in the field of effective management of municipal and industrial waste, focusing on threats to the natural environment resulting from the production and storage of waste. The assessment and forecasting of environmental pollution caused by industrial activities and anthropogenic pressures, and the possible countermeasures for such phenomena, are a special area of interest for our team. A laboratory equipped with specialized equipment that enables, among other inquiries, the sampling and analysis of contaminants in solid and liquid materials (soil, water and waste) and the determination of traces of mercury in wastewater, sediments, rocks and fuels, is a part of the division.

Scientific and research activity

The division carries out research in areas related to environmental protection; special attention is paid to the measurement, monitoring and forecasting of ecosystem contamination with metals (mercury) and the assessment of the impact of existing and planned industrial facilities on the quality of individual elements of the environment. The assessments of the environmental impact of waste management in light of the applicable laws and solutions applied in European countries, activities in the field of optimization of waste management systems and analysis of the impact of municipal and industrial waste storage technologies on the quality of soil and water environment in the vicinity of landfills constitute important elements of the division’s activities. The evaluation of the possibility of using some groups of industrial waste for economic purposes and the identification of threats to human life and the environment related to asbestos-containing products and waste are currently two very important areas of our operation.

Research and development and service activities

For many years, the division has been cooperating with local government units (municipalities and districts) when carrying out expert opinions on the location of public investments and developing local environmental protection plans (environmental and waste management programmes, including programmes for asbestos-containing materials, annual analyses of the municipal waste management, reports, etc.). We also actively cooperate with the industry, carrying out studies and expert opinions for, among others, the former Trzebionka mining works in Trzebinia and Tauron Wydobycie S.A. in Jaworzno. We have implemented several environmental protection programmes for municipalities and districts and several dozens of inventories and maintenance programmes for asbestos-containing materials. For many years, we have been conducting constant monitoring of the soil and water environment in the area of the Barycz landfill site near Kraków for the Wieliczka Mine S.A. In addition, we have carried out a number of expert opinions in the fields of environmental impact assessment and waste management (reports, hydrogeological documentation and documentation of the closure and reclamation of landfills).

Our services

Based on the experience of qualified employees, we offer services in the following areas:

Environmental protection

  • Complex environmental impact assessment of investments and projects,
  • Integrated permits and applications for issuance of sector permits (aquatic legal surveys, emission of pollutants into the air and waste management),
  • Preparation of waste management and environmental protection programmes, with particular emphasis on waste containing asbestos, along with the inventory of such waste,
  •  Development of concepts and projects for closing and reclaiming municipal and industrial waste landfills,
  • Development of the principles of selective collection of municipal waste for municipalities, taking into account the current legal requirements,
  • Providing solutions for mining waste management.

Monitoring and forecasting environmental pollution

  • Monitoring the impact of landfill sites, the surroundings of communication routes and industrial facilities,
  • Performing inventory activities, assessing the environmental impact of contaminated sites and examining pollution migration processes,
  • Evaluating the impact of investment incentives and the assessment of risks related to asbestos-containing products and wastes.

Laboratory and field studies

  •  Collection and analysis of environmental samples,
  • Assessment of a contaminant’s leachable (batch test and dynamic tests),
  • Water and soil contamination analysis (in terms of inorganic compounds),
  •  Determination of trace mercury content in solid and liquid samples.
