Poland is represented by the Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

In the ENTRANCES project, two groups of regions will be subject to detailed research: mining regions where coal mining is the driving force for regional economy and regions with high emissions, where intensive use of coal and/or other fossil fuels causes significant deterioration of air quality. 13 such European regions have been identified where research will focus on identifying the challenges they face in the energy transformation process, not only in terms of technological and economic but also social transformation, as a psychological process that affects the daily lives of local communities. In Poland, Silesia, as a mining region and the Kraków Metropolitan Area, which is facing high emissions of pollutants causing smog, will be studied.

Interdisciplinary research will analyse the processes taking place in the examined regions undergoing energy transformation from the socio-economic, socio-technical, socio-cultural, socio-political, socio-ecological, socio-psychological and gender perspectives. An interdisciplinary approach, international and inter-organisational dialogue involving more than 3,000 people, including scientists, organisations and stakeholder groups, will provide a basis for understanding the extent to which these regions are exposed to a deep and sometimes painful transformation of social, economic and cultural life and identify actions to mitigate adverse trends.

For more information, please contact us:

D.
